John Grant Tournament: Maryhill 2-5 Largs Thistle.

We travelled to Keanie Park this morning to take on Largs Thistle in the first game of this seasons John Grant Tournament.

We found ourselves ahead within two minutes as a corner travelled deep into the Largs penalty area and was met with a powerful strike from a Trialist who found the bottom corner. The lead lasted eight minutes as Largs drew level. A cross from the left sailed to the back post and was headed back across goal for a tap-in. Largs took the lead on the half hour mark. A clearance was intercepted in midfield and was worked into the box. The Largs man made no mistake when one-on-one with our keeper. Just four minutes later Largs extended their lead when they won possession deep in the Maryhill half, quickly worked the ball into the box and finished with a low effort past the keeper to go in 3-1 ahead at the break.

Largs went further ahead just five minutes into the second half when a cross from the left was glanced into the far bottom corner to go 4-1 ahead. Maryhill managed to reduce the deficit to two from another corner. The ball, again, travelled deep into the Largs area and was headed partially clear. This time the keeper managed to get down quickly to save the shot from the edge of the box but was unable to hold it which allowed the in-rushing striker to calmly lift the ball over the keeper before he was able to get back to his feet following the initial shot. Both sides made a number of subs as the game opened up and legs started to tire. The final goal was scored on seventy four minutes when a Largs defender rose highest to head home from a corner as the game finished 5-2.

We return to Keanie Park tomorrow (Sunday, July 3rd) morning as we play Johnstone Burgh in the tournament 3rd/4th place play-off. Kick-off is at 10:45am again. Entry by donation.
